June Challenge

So as promised, I am posting my June challenge at the end of my car trip.  But first, I thought that I would fill you in on a few of the things that I learned at the conference I just attended "Exercise is Medicine".

-In the Fit vs. Fat debate, I have changed my perspective and point of view.  While being fit and lean is probably the best scenario, being fit and active seems like it may be more important than achieving any specific weight goal.   Fit and active people seem to be healthier than unfit people at any weight.  In counseling patients, I will definitely now be focusing on lifestyle changes and even in the absence of weight loss people are winning.

-Kids need to move!  Kids that don't have basic functional movements down by third grade are less likely to be active in sports and less likely to be active as adults.  We need to teach and encourage our kids to move!

-Sleep is super important.  Sleeping less than 8 hours a night may be associated with a change in metabolism so that you are burning less fat and more lean tissue in the setting of an energy deficit

So anyway, BACK TO THE REAL GOAL OF THIS POST, my June Challenge. So in honor of Erik and my FIFTH Anniversary and Father's Day, my goal is to do something extra for him everyday this month.  He is an incredible man and is the most loyal and kind person that I know.  I need to tell him this on a more regular basis.  So Erik, I LOVE YOU and can't wait to see you in TWO DAYS!

  1. I have decided to do a 30-day abs challenge this month, located here: http://hasfit.com/30-day-ripped-six-pack-abs-workout-routine-6-pack-abdominal-plan-schedule/
I think it will be doable, but difficult. The plan calls for two day off per week, which will make it easier than trying to do it every day.
The push-ups have gone pretty well this month. I think I missed three days, which I think is acceptable. This should be about making positive changes, not feeling bad if it can't get done every single day.
I've had a nice trip. Not looking forward to the drive today, but excited to see K and e tomorrow!

  2. My goal of doing 50 pushpus every day in May went OK... there were 4 or 5 days when I didn't end up doing them, and those mostly came at the end of the month as I lost sight on the focused goal.

I've been thinking of the challenge for the past two days, trying to come up with mine for June. Over the past week or so my schedule had us at several parties (for Luisa's birthday and the Memorial Day holiday), and on the road for work. Starting with a Memorial Day party and continuing through the week, I tended to over-eat and eat "junk", and I've been paying the price in terms of feeling terrible with some reflux and plenty of GI discomfort. In a bid to feel better again, my goal is to get back to not eating processed foods (especially sweets/cookies). The biggest challenges here will be a business trip for work this week, and our weeklong trip to San Diego at the end of the month for Kirk & Amber's wedding/family vacation. Feel free to shake a finger at me in San Diego (or before then) if you see me making a questionable food choice!

  3. I want to start riding my bike again. I will try to do this at least twice in June. We did have salmon or other fish at least once a week in May and had more Copper River salmon yesterday. I will also track my food and activity on lose it app.

  4. Tom and I are going to stretch every night after the kids are in bed. June will be a busy month visiting family and preparing to move so we feel this goal will be attainable for the month.

  5. Argh... last night I fell off of my "healthy eating" wagon. Really, I just ate too much at a pool party with Luisa's Y-Adventure Guides group. I had a beer, one piece of pizza, and way too much chips/hummus/cheese. I broke the machine!

I've been doing a really good job of not over-eating and not eating junk all month (even with last week's business trip), so last night's over-eat was a good reminder of why I make the choice to do a good job eating!
