And what a summer it has been! It is funny how long it can take to true lily unwind and decompress and I am so thankful to have been able to take an extended amount of time off. Time off always helps me keep my priorities straight and refocus on what is important...family, friends, health. Thank you to all of you for helping to remind me of how lucky I am.
I have been so very impressed by all of you and your focus on health and activity this summer! It has been inspiring to me and been very motivating to be among a larger family that is focused on their health. It has certainly made me feel accountable in ways that I have not felt before...Thank You!
In terms of my goals, in July I had set 2 goals. First to eat at least 5 fruits/veggies a day prior to other lesser snack foods. I was fairly successful on this and it really did help my studying...well that and dark chocolate. The second goal was to spend some time each day reflecting...that was a big failure. A lesson to me on why setting more than one goal can back fire. It was to much to keep track of and reflecting actually takes way more energy than I anticipated. It is hard to actually be conscious and aware rather than just living on autopilot so to speak.
I didn't set any formal goals or blog in August but in hindsight this was probably a good thing as I really tried to limit my outside contact with technology...less email, less Internet etc. It has actually made a huge difference and I hope I can continue to set some technology boundaries once I return to work.
So now onto September. I have decided to go set the goal of obtaining enough daily calcium in my diet...something I don't usually get enough of since I don't like the taste of milk, am only so-so on yogurt and am somewhat lactose intolerant. For me the suggested daily intake is a approximately 1000 mg/day. I need to step it up!
So now it is your turn...what inspired you over the summer, did you make and/or meet any goals, any new goals for September 's challenge, any good and healthy end-of-summer recipes to share? Post it all in comments or send me a longer post and I'll put it up on the blog.
Over the summer when we were on vacation a lot, we spent time walking/hiking, swimming, and biking on a regular basis. Now that we're back in the swing of being at home and getting ready for school, I haven't resumed my pre-summer routines of push-ups, bike rides, or swims. I need to get back in to that, but need to sit down to think about a plan rather than just randomly saying "I need to move more", which is not a plan and doesn't tend to work.
ReplyDeleteI know September will be tough as I'll be away a LOT, with 4 days in Menlo Park and 8 days in Switzerland. I should get plenty of walking in while in Switzerland at least.
I like the idea of trying to unplug from my iPhone too... even I recognize I spend too much time every day staring at the stupid thing. Especially when I'm home in the evenings, I should put it aside (out of earshot) between dinner and bedtime- it would hep me be a more attentive dad and husband.
All good things to consider as September rapidly approaches. This weekend I'll come up with my goals, as we're biking on to Lopez Island for the weekend.
After two great months, Katie is about to start work and I'll be back to full-time dad. But starting in October Evie will go to preschool and I will have a bit of time for myself. I feel like I did a really nice job in June of sticking to the abs workouts and push-ups in addition to 3-4 exercise sessions per week. I would like to get back to that as I have not done it at all since we lived in LA.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling a bit like a native Wiscovite, with too much cheese and junk in my diet, and I am not as fit as when I left California-but there has been much more to do here, as now there is a house to take care of, and we've been on vacation quite a bit as well.
So my goals for September will be to resume LA levels of activity with 3-4 run/bike workouts each week and 5 days/week of abs and push-ups. I would like to say the diet will improve, but really the biggest difference is the amount of fruit available here vs in LA, and I don't see that hanging.
Changing, not hanging.
ReplyDeleteI kept my garden blog up daily except for one day in July and have continued posting in August and so far in September. I am back to my 3 days a week at the Y and will look for some additional classes there when the food preservation slows down. I am busy making salsa and marinara sauces for the winter months and also canned peaches. I want to dehydrate some apples and more plums from the neighbors tree. It will be nice to eat our homegrown and home made products. I also did ride my bike finally - and hope to ride a few more times while the weather is good.
